Q: abilify??????????????????????/??????
hi I am 16 years old and I was prescribed abilify . I think I am getting seizures in my sleep, can it cause this ?

A: Abilify is prescribed for Bipolar disorder. If you are having sleep disturbances, notify your doctor, not Yahoo answers!
And read up on the side effects:

Q: Abilify???
I’ve been living (and functioning) with bipolar disorder for 3 years now, and recently my doctor asked me if I would like to switch the medication that I am on (an extended release Lithium) to Abilify. I had never heard of it before, and am was just wondering if anyone knows anything about it, or if anyone is currently being treated with it. plz and thnk u!!!!

A: Ditto the crazymeds link. You should ask around at the sister site http://www.crazyboards.org

Q: Why does abilify make you sweat and is there anything that helps?
I really like abilify but it makes me really hot so i sweat a lot in my arm pits. Is this because abilify causes high blood pressure, or is it just the way abilify affects my brain?

A: wow i thought it was just me. it also makes me eat nonstop and crave salt like no one’s business. i have an appt tomorrow with the doc and i will be asking to stop it. not that i think the options are any better, but being smelly and fat is too much.

Q: How long does it take for Abilify to start to work for auditory hallucinations?
I’ve been on it a week. I was on Zyprexa before and im decreasing that dosage slowly in order to eventually just be on Abilify.

A: Hard to say. May take a couple of weeks. Depends on how you react to the med.

Q: How long does it take for Abilify to get out of your system?
My doctor prescribed Abilify 20 mg daily for me about three weeks ago to treat Bipolar 1 Disorder. I am having the worst side effects, still, three weeks into this. I am extremely anxious, a total insomniac, and cannot sit still for more than five minutes. I am not going to take it anymore. When will this stop?!?!? Help. I will call my doctor tomorrow. I have three times already, but cannot get ahold of him or his nurse. Thank you so much.

A: My doctor put me on Abilify and I’m worried about its effects. I don’t even know if it’ll work for me. It may take as long as a week for it to ease out of your system and probably another week for it to leave your system. I hate being on these meds, however it may help to relieve some anxiety issues that I have. Good luck

Q: How to manage the side effects of abilify and welbutrin?
I am diagnosed as ADD, Borderline Personality Disorder, and Clinically Depressed and am on Abilify and Welbutrin. Some side effects I’ve experienced are weight gain, extreme fatigue (sleeping 9-11 hours a night), and slight hair loss. Does anyone know how to manage these side effects while not going off the medicine completely? I’ve found it near impossible to lose weight while on these medicines especially.

A: Speak with the doctor about the fatigue. He/she may be able to adjust the dosage or the timing of the meds for that. Diet and exercise are the first line of defense for medication weight gain. For antipsychotic (Abilify being an antispsychotic) weight gain, I’ve heard that you could add a medication called metformin (Glucophage) but I don’t know how well it works as I’ve never tried it and I don’t know if a doc would do this (look it up online; there should be articles on the combinations of antipsychotics and metformin). With the hair loss I don’t know. For that, you may either have to deal with it or switch meds. I’ve never had that happen to me on the numerous medications I’ve been on for my bipolar disorder. I hope some of my info helps and I wish you best of luck in your treatment in the road ahead…

Q: How well does abilify work for schizphrenia?
I take abilify for bipolar disorder, but I may have of developed schizophrenia. I was informed that it also treats that, but how well?

A: I also have bipolar disorder and get visual hallucinations and at the appropriate dosage (15mg) I manage to not have the hallucinations. It works very well.

Q: How long does Abilify take to take effect?
HI people,

I’ve been prescribed 5mg (to start with) of Abilify to slow down my mind but wondering how long until i start feeling different, if at all?
I understand 5mg isn’t a lot.

Thanks in advance.

A: It was about a month for me. Then afterwards 2 wks. for the 10 to kick in. Ooooooohhhhhhh bad idea(upping to ten that is).

Q: What are the harmful effects of mixing effexor xr and abilify with marijuana?
I’ve been so exhausted lately…having day time tiredness and difficulty making it through class and i think it has something to do with the experimentation i tried last weekend. I have been on 7 mg of abilify, 75 mg of effexor xr for about 4 months now and smoked some marijuana. I have also been taking cola syrup (supplement) for anxiety. But now i cant stay awake or focus in class! What’s going on…somebody who knows tell me.

A: Abilify can make you tired, pot definitely does.

Don’t quit taking you meds, though !

Q: Are there any cheaper alternatives to abilify, or something similiar my psychiatrist could prescribe?
I can’t afford the 2mg of abilify my psychiatrist prescribes, as a one month supply costs $120.

What can I do?

A: Abilify is an atypical anti-psychotic medication that can be used in addition to other medications to treat depression that won’t go away. There is another medication called: Risperidone(that is the generic medication, which will be cheaper) that is also an anti-psychotic medication that can be used the same way Abilify is used. Depending on what symptoms you have, your doctor can prescribe other medications that are much cheaper. Here is a website that describes Risperidone: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a694015.html

Hope I helped, and good luck. I was on Abilify and Risperidone before, and they both helped.

Q: How long will I have to take Abilify for bi-polar syndrome?
What type of untoward signs and symptoms might occur when first starting Abilify?

A: Your doctor should have gone over this with you.

Q: What are the most common side effects from taking 10 mg of abilify per day?
I am a 43 year-old woman who started taking Abilify two weeks ago. I started out at 5 mg, and now am taking 10 mg. I am 140 lbs. What are the most common and marked side effects? Ever since I increased the amount from 5 to 10, my vision is blurry, blurry, blurry. Common or not? Thanks.

A: here is an FDA link:

http://www.fda.gov/cder/foi/label/2007/021436s017,021713s012,21729s004,021866s004lbl.pdf

in the long term the drug promotes diabetes and uncontrolled muscle movments.

It is not uncommon for blurred vision, as you can see from the FDA literature at such and such dosage it occurs 3 times more than in the placebo group.

It use to be a few decades ago that powerful antipsychotic drugs were as rarely prescribed as there were psychotics in the population. But marketing pressure to create profits has changed that.

These powerfull psych pharmaceutical companies influence government policy. Our government now says that 1/3 of the population is mentally ill. Do you really believe that?

The way the market expands is by having the drug companies pour money into universities, the medical professors publish in the literature that normal behaviour is actually signs of deep psychosis, bipolar, or whatever, and that gives doctors freedom to label anyone from toddlers to senior citizens as being loco. Then you are in their power, and often the goverment ends up footing the bill.

It is about as moral as running an unjust war just so large corporations can bill for products and services related to the war.

In the bible it is called sorcery.

Q: What is the diffrence between Depakote and Abilify?
My dr just put me on Depakote. I am on Abilify right now and he is going to take me off that. I was wondering about the diffrence between these drugs, and what one is better for racing thoughts? Thank you.

A: Depakote, in both delayed-release tablet and capsule form, is used to treat certain types of seizures and convulsions. It may be prescribed alone or with other epilepsy medications. The delayed-release tablets are also used to control the manic episodes–periods of abnormally high spirits and energy–that occur in bipolar disorder (manic depression). An extended-release form of Depakote, Depakote ER, is prescribed to prevent migraine headaches. The delayed-release tablets are also used for this purpose & Abilify is used in the treatment of schizophrenia, the psychological disorder that causes its victims to lose touch with reality, often triggering hallucinations, delusions (false beliefs), and disorganized thinking. The drug is thought to work by modifying sensitivity to two of the brain’s chief chemical messengers, serotonin and dopamine. Racing thoughts? I’m not too sure about that one. Anyway I hope the info I found for you helped you out alot. Since I helped you would you mind answering a few of my questions please? Have a nice day & good luck with everything.

Q: What are the side effects of being taken suddenly off Abilify?
I was told to stop taking because it was causing me to have suicidal urges. What are the side effects of being taken off of Abilify?

A: The medication alters the way your body handles dopamine and serotonin. These chemicals have many functions throughout the body in relation to nerve transmission. Most likely you will only experience only mild reactions to stopping Abilify. These are things such as nausea, dizziness, diarrhea. There is a concern with the sudden discontinuation causing an irregular heartbeat or seizures. For this reason, although failrly rare, you should discuss with your doctor a way to taper off over a couple of weeks and closely monitor you during the process.

Q: How much time before bed time should Abilify be taken?
On my prescription bottle it says to take one pill every night before bed time. But I don’t really know if that means right at bed time or an hour or two before bed time. Does anyone taking Abilify know?

A: It means generally when you don’t mind being drowsy for a while. Most people take it and other “at bedtime” meds right before they plan on sleeping. Others may take it an hour to 30 minutes prior. Either way is okay as long as you remember to always take it around the same time of day.
